cmiVFX has released the first video of a brand new three-part series on Houdini FX for simulation of real-time motion. We'll start this video by building a rigging system that works for any kind of four-wheeled vehicle. The goal is to allow you to drive it in real-time just like you would in a video game by using the mouse and keyboard to control the motion of the vehicle. Part one of this series is full of vehicle animation secrets. We'll learn how to make the wheels rotate accurately, we'll create a physically accurate steering system, and much more. Our mentor, Alaliwi Hossam-Aldin, uses particles to create a fully controllable keyboard engine that will allow you to drive your 3D vehicle in any direction and by any speed value. Alaliwi will break down the complex math used in vehicle simulation for you so that it's easy to understand. If you're looking to install craft animation inside Houdini in the same way you would if you were using Maya or 3DSMax, then you're at the right place!
Chapter Descriptions
Intro
This is a fast introduction that tells you about the craft animation plug-in and explains what we will be doing in this video series.
How to Know the Path (Speed and Curvature)
It's important to understand our path as we're working in real-time. We'll learn what is being controlled when a real vehicle is being driven.
Mouse and Keyboard Nodes
Here we'll learn how the mouse and the keyboard nodes will work in Houdini and we'll learn how to create channels from the "tow nodes." We'll see the different methods that can be used and the results that they provide.
Building the Main Simulation
When we move the mouse to the right or left, the vehicle must turn accordingly. We'll learn about the area node and how it can help us accomplish this. We'll also learn how to adjust the speed of the vehicle and how to place it in the correct position in 3D space.
Refining the Vehicle's Movement
We'll define a real value of acceleration for the vehicle and we'll add lag to the curvature and speed, which will provide some delay in response from mouse movement.
Zero Zone
We'll define the place in the screen where our vehicle must stop moving.
Keyboard Engine
The keyboard engine will let us use the keyboard to drive the vehicle just like in any video game.
Wheel Rigging
Here we'll learn how to make the wheels rotate quickly or slowly based on the vehicle speed.
Steering System for the Front Wheels
In this chapter there will be a demonstration that shows you the different types of steering systems that are found in real life vehicles and how they work. Once we know how the steering system works, we'll apply it to our vehicle so that it will steer correctly, just like in real life. Then we'll test it out!
